I hope to campaign Fetlar this year while giving Rudi a well earned rest. 


Critique missing from 2014 when Fetlar won minor puppy at LKA

MPD (6,2a) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, very stylish b/b dog puppy presenting a picture of balance standing & on the move, good head with a gentle expression, correct front & plenty of heartroom, deep in body & ribs well sprung, level topline & well set tail, good angulation to shoulders & hindquarters enables him to move with plenty of reach in front & drive from his well muscled quarters 

January 18th : The year started well with a trip down to Manchester Championship show where Fetlar was placed 1st in Minor Puppy - judge Jane Howarth.

 He then went into a large puppy stakes class and came 4th - judge Frank Kane 


January 25th - Fetlar was entered in the Junior class as there were no puppy classes for the breed.  He was placed 1st and awarded Best Puppy in Breed by breed judge Zoe Stirk


ENGLISH SETTERS - J (5,2a) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, promising b/b puppy, just 8 months, who is of excellent make & shape. He looks very mature with plenty of body & coat for age. Handsome head, with kind expression & low set ears. Good reach of neck into well placed shoulders. Well constructed throughout with good angulation. When settled moved steady using his tail & holding his topline. Pleased to award him BP, & watch him go on to BPIS3 

He then went into the puppy challenge and came Puppy Group 3 under judge Karen Stirk. 

Puppy Group 3 : Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, masculine head with soft expressive eyes.  He has a good reach of neck with well-angulated shoulders, & with good width & depth of chest for age, topline held correctly on the move.  Well angulated quarters, & well off for bone & substance.  Good coat for age, presented & handled well, moving freely around the ring. 

 1st February.  MESS Championship Show .  Fetlar moved into puppy and came second in Puppy Dog  , 1st in Maiden (Judge Val Watkins) and then 2nd in Junior Stakes (Judge Marje Burt)

Critique from Maiden Dog :

1st Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, quality puppy, good head & eye, overall well balanced with a level topline which he held on the move, strong bone 

Critique from the Junior Stakes :

2 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, a promising b/b boy, well made. Lovely shape & conformation, good head, dark eye giving a soft expression, good neck, good bone. Gave his handler a hard time but once settled moved purposefully of short hocks 

1st March Fetlar took part in Gundog Breeds Association of Scotland Top Puppy competition and reached the semifinals.

 5th March - Crufts.  What can I say? An overwhelming day with Fetlar winning Puppy Dog, then Best Puppy Dog, then Best Puppy in Breed! Judge Linda Harris. 

PD (8,1) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, very elegant 10 months b/b, showing great potential. Classic head, long clean neck leading into good shoulders. When stacked presented a pleasing outline, level topline, correct tailset. Straight front, good deep chest. BP 





29th March - English Setter Society of Wales.  Fetlar won Puppy Dog, Novice Dog, then Best Puppy Dog, Then



Judges Miss G Williams & Mr P Schoneville.


P (5) 1 BP, Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, very mature 11 months blue. Excels in bone & conformation, short coupled, strong well angulated hindquarters which he used on the move. Shown in full coat. Presented the finished picture. Shall follow his career with interest 


15th April : Rudi has sired a litter of 9 (four dogs and 5 bitches) out of Mariglen Michaela at Benchmark. 


19th April - English Setter Association.  Fetlar came second in Puppy Dog and Novice, won Tyro (only one there!) and then won a lovely Junior Stakes class of 10.  Thanks to judges Jill Kelly and Margaret Henry

Thomsons Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd mature blue of different type. Bigger all through than 1. Lots to like about him, masculine head,well placed shoulders,plenty of body and bone. In excellent coat and condition. Jill Kelly

The Peter Field Memorial Junior Award (10,3a) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, this very pleasing blue dog of nearly one year old, masculine head with soft expression & dark eye. Long neck into well placed shoulders with good length of upper arm. Level topline in good hard condition. Moved well.  Margaret Henry


26th April - English Setter Society of Scotland.  Fetlar won Puppy Dog and Novice Dog and came second in the Graduate Stakes. Judges Karen Barker and Margaret Attwood

Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwyd, b/b dog, 11½ months. Masculine head with a defined stop, dark eyes & low set ears, long neck leading into angulated shoulders, deep chest & spring of rib, level topline, correct tailset, moved well. Margaret Attwood 


4th May - Border Counties Gundog Club.  Fetlar won Junior and Graduate and then was awarded Best of Breed by judge Carole Bailey

ENGLISH SETTERS - J (4,1) 1 BOB, Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, 1 year old bl/belton boy. Lovely masculine head. Dark eye of desired shape. Nice expression & good finish to muzzle. Well constructed & beautifully presented. In very good coat & condition. Moved happily, holding his topline. Sure this young man will have a bright future 


Confirmation has been received from the Kennel Club that Fetlar has been awarded his Junior Warrant and can now be officially known as

Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd JW


15th May - SKC Fetlar won Junior Dog. Judge Aiden McKiernan

JD (3) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, mature blue presented beautifully, balanced, pleasing outline, well defined head with good reach of neck, correct fore & hindquarters, plenty of depth through chest, good level topline, moved with drive & reach covering the ground well 

23rd May - Carluke Open Show. Fetlar won Open and Best of Breed.  He was then shortlisted to the last six in the group. Judge S Williamson.

 24th May - Gundog Breeds Association of Scotland Open Show - Fetlar won Special Yearling and Best of Breed.  Judge - S Taggart. 

31st May - Larkhall Open Show - Fetlar won Graduate and Best of Breed -          Judge  I Cuthill

ENGLISH SETTERS Graduate(2,1) 1 BOB, Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd JW, dog of 13 months showing typical breed character with his ever wagging tail. Mature for his age. Moved soundly.   

7th June - Three Counties Championship Show -  Fetlar won Junior Dog and also came fourth in the Any Variety Junior Stakes - Judge Mr C Atkinson

JD (8) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, clean front assembly, kind dark eye, strong bone, has length of neck with slight arch, substance in rear quarters, positive driving action with width between hocks, (no weakness here) 

14th June - St Andrew's and Cupar Open Show - Fetlar won Open and Best of Breed - Judge Mr A Wight 

ENGLISH SETTERS  1 BOB, Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, lots to admire in this teenager. All male in head, super expression, decent neck, but upright in front & he exaggerates it on the move where he is so full of himself. Well ribbed, spotless jacket & correct tail action 

20th  June - Border Union Championship Show - Fetlar was third in Junior Dog. - Judge Mr E Evans.

Today received word that Fetlar's Hip Score is 7 : 8. 

27th June - Blackpool Championship Show - Fetlar was second in Junior Dog Judge Mrs Lorna Howarth

18th July - Hawick Open Show - Fetlar won Open and Best of Breed - Judge Mrs N Ellis

ENGLISH SETTERS (1) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspwellwynd, 15 month old boy, showed well when settled in the blustery conditions. Classic head & soft expression, good coat & tail carriage which he used well on the move. Good front & feet, best of shoulders, BOB. 

19th July - Annandale Open Show - Fetlar won Open and Best of Breed - Judge Mr T Johnston 

ENGLISH SETTERS (3) Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, good skull & length of head, defined stop & nice expression, good length of neck & well laid shoulder, deep & well sprung rib, strong loin & well angled rear, moved freely with good head carriage, in good coat & condition, holds an elegant appearance going round.

25th July - Leeds Championship Show - Fetlar won Junior Dog. Judge Mrs C Moorhouse. 

1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, blue dog, full of substance & quality. Well off for bone. Well chiselled head & reach of neck, flowing into well laid back shoulders. Excellent spring of rib & strong quarters, which showed when he was on the move as he really drove around the ring with the correct tail action. One to watch for the future 

15th August - Dumfries and Galloway Open Show - Fetlar won Open Dog, Best of Breed and Group 3. Judge Mr David Alcorn

ENGLISH SETTERS (5) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd; 2 Taylor's Mariglen Fathom for Maursett, both 1 & 2 have type in abundance & now I see they are litter brother & sister so can see why! Fetlar is just a little more advanced in his maturity at present so took the edge over Fathom. Both have excellent heads, beautiful expressions. Super front angles, excellent toplines & well set on tails with complimentary hindquarter angulation. Fetlar, being more advanced in development, was just a bit more together on the move today, but both are excellent prospects. Fetlar clinched BOB & moved out so well in the group ring he couldn't be denied G3; 3 Vallance & Callander's Shambellie Last Stand at Rowanmyle. 

16th August - Larkhall Open Show - Fetlar won Best Of Breed - Judge Miss C Ruddy



30th August - SKC Championship Show (No tickets) - Fetlar won Junior Dog and Reserve Best Dog judge S Williamson

 JD 1 (RBD) Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd a strongly built & well balanced 16 months b/b.  Pleasing head and expression, well laid shoulder, good depth of chest & well ribbed through with strong quarters.  in good coat & condition.  Moved out well.

2nd October - Driffield Championship Show (No tickets) - Fetlar won Junior Dog and

*****BEST DOG and RESERVE BEST OF BREED *****Judge R Strudwick.

Yearling Stakes - Fetlar came 3rd - judge D Howarth 

11th October - Tay Valley Gundog Association - Fetlar won Post Graduate Dog and then BOB.  Judge Maud Leather 

17th October - English Setter Society of Scotland - Fetlar won Special Yearling but the star of the day was undoubtedly Rudi  who won his Veteran class and then Best Dog, Best Veteran Dog, then.....................................


VD (3,1a) 1 Thomson, Swannery Valentino's Legacy to Caspellwynd, nicely balanced bl/belton with a kind dark eye, good expression, deep chest with good angulation fore & aft, short level back & tailset, moved really well 

YD (1) 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, stood alone, was a picture on the stand. Dark oval shaped eye, kind expression. Long neck into good shoulders. Good depth of chest, well muscled. Good second thigh, moved really well & good tail carriage.  

Brace (1) 1 Thomson's once settled Father & Son, stood & moved around the ring very well.  

23rd October - Midland Counties Championship Show - Fetlar won Junior Dog - judge Mrs J Barber 

JD 1 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, lovely quality b/b dog. Masculine head with correct stop, low set ears, dark eyes & pleasing expression. Super reach of neck leading to well laid shoulders. Excellent spring of rib & strong well angulated quarters. Moved with drive using all the ring. Shown in lovely coat & condition. I shall follow his future with interest; 

1st November - Waverley Gundogs - Fetlar won Open and BOB - Judge Wendy Fleming 

7th November - Setter & Pointer - Fetlar came 4th in Special Yearling and Rudi came 2nd in Veteran Dog - judge - Christine Normansell

14th November - Gundog Breeds Association of Scotland - Fetlar came 2nd in Special Yearling and VHC in the Members' Open Stakes. - Judges D Martin and D Moss  

2 Thomson's Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd, very close to 1, nice type, lovely head, good bone, correct shoulders & forearm. 

Rudi showed his son how to do things, winning Veteran Dog, Reserve CC and Best Veteran in Breed, making the shortlist to the last six for BVIS.

VD (1) 1 Thomson's Swannery Valentino's Legacy to Caspellwynd, carrying his age well, he is a good type of dog with an excellent head, neck & shoulder placement. Has correct amount of bone & good feet. RCC

21st November - Land o' Burns Open Show - Fetlar won Open Dog, BOB and Gundog Group 1 under judge Judith Carruthers. 

5th December - West Lothian - Fetlar won Open Dog and BOB under judge F Gilroy

19th December - Carluke - Fetlar won Open Dog and BOB under judge R Mosedale
